From 4th January until 8th January, 1916 and then again from 16th January until 19th January, the 9th Rifle Brigade battalion of 42 Brigade, 14th Division were in the trenches near Elverdinghe during which time there were 12 casualties. Two companies were in positions east of the canal and the other two in farms to the west of it. All the trenches were in a very bad condition and the front line consisted of a series of isolated posts. The enemy snipers and machine-guns were very active throughout this period and as a consequence 9th Rifle Brigade suffered nearly 70 casualties.
